Clover vs Square: Compare Sellers and Terms

The Clover vs Square decision involves both daily work and the agreement behind the device. Square sells directly with published pricing. Clover reaches merchants through many banks and processors, with negotiated terms that can differ by seller. Start with your service needs, then compare the written offer rather than the screen alone.

Short answer

How should I compare Clover and Square?

Square offers direct signup and published pricing, while Clover offers vary by the bank or processor selling the system. Compare checkout workflows, hardware restrictions, support responsibilities and exit terms. Neither approach suits every business. Ask for a written breakdown that separates processing, software, equipment and optional services.

Square published pricing

Square Free plan $0 a month; Square Plus $49 a month per location; Square Premium $149 a month per location. Square has no long term contract.

The in person card rate is 2.6% + 15 cents on Free, 2.5% + 15 cents on Plus, and 2.4% + 15 cents on Premium. Online pricing is 3.3% + 30 cents on Free and 2.9% + 30 cents on Plus and Premium. The manually keyed rate is 3.5% + 15 cents.

Hardware prices are Square Reader $59 and Square Terminal $299 and Square Register $899 respectively. Square pricing checked on squareup.com, October 2026.

Clover offers depend on the seller

Clover pricing varies by plan and by the processor or bank that sells it. We quote real numbers on a free statement review. Ask the seller to separate software, processing, equipment and app subscriptions so you can compare the full arrangement.

We are not a Clover partner. We do not resell Square. We are a referral business, do not set prices and do not sell hardware directly. Our role is to explain the offer and your existing statement in plain English.

Check portability and exit terms

Do not assume a device can follow you to another processor. Clover devices are often tied to the seller's processing arrangement. Ask whether the exact device can move, who must approve the move and what happens to your software access.

Treat Square hardware as part of the Square setup unless compatibility elsewhere is confirmed. Square's lack of a long term contract does not answer every question about subscriptions or equipment purchases. With Clover, read processing cancellation terms, equipment leases and any early termination provisions separately.

Match the setup to your work

Square may fit a merchant who values direct signup and a published price structure. Clover may fit a merchant who wants to compare offers through different sellers. Those are starting points, not verdicts about which costs less or works better.

Run a sale, refund, tip adjustment and end of shift report in a demonstration. Restaurants should also test split checks and kitchen routing. Common questions

Still not sure? Ask us directly.

Is Clover sold only directly?

No. Many banks and processors sell Clover. Ask which business signs the processing agreement and which business provides support.

Does a Square plan price cover every cost?

A plan price is not the whole operating cost. Consider processing activity, hardware and any optional services you choose.

Can I reuse my Clover device?

Ask the prospective processor to confirm compatibility for your exact device before buying or changing providers. Do not rely on the device name alone.

What should I send for a review?

Upload a recent processing statement through the contact page. If you have a proposed agreement, include it so the seller's terms can be examined alongside current fees.
