Clover for Restaurants: Test Your Service Flow
Choosing Clover for restaurants means matching the equipment and software to how guests order and pay. A counter service cafe has different needs from a dining room with servers and a host stand. Map the path from order entry to kitchen preparation, payment and closing reports before accepting a seller's recommended package.
Short answer
How should a restaurant evaluate Clover?
Start with service style. Consider Station Duo at a counter or host stand, Flex for tableside work and Mini at a small counter. Then test kitchen routing, tip adjustments, split checks and online orders with your menu. Confirm software requirements, staff permissions and seller terms before committing to equipment.
Put each device where work happens
Station Duo is a full countertop station that may suit a busy counter or host stand. Check the available space and how guests reach the customer facing screen. Mini is a compact countertop option for smaller counters and can work alongside other stations.
Flex is a handheld with a built in receipt printer that can support tableside payment. Have staff carry it through the dining room and practice presenting the check. Confirm the exact models and accessories with the seller rather than assuming every device bundle includes the same equipment.
Trace the order through the kitchen
Ask whether kitchen printers or screens suit each preparation area. Test routing for drinks, starters and main dishes, including modifiers and allergies communicated under your own procedures. Change an order after sending it and check what the kitchen sees.
For online ordering, confirm which plan or app supplies the service. Test order acceptance, unavailable items, pickup instructions and refunds. Ask whether online orders join the same kitchen queue and how staff can distinguish them from orders placed in the dining room.
Practice checks, tips and permissions
Split a check by guest and by item. Move an item to another check, accept different payment methods and print the receipts guests need. Ask the seller to demonstrate any limitations before deciding the workflow will suit a large table.
Practice tips entered at payment and tip adjustments made later. Confirm the permitted adjustment window and how tips appear in closing reports. Set staff permissions for refunds, voids, discounts and report access. Managers should know how to review exceptions without sharing their login credentials.
Test a busy shift and inspect the statement
Simulate a busy shift with overlapping orders, an item correction and a payment interruption. Assign staff their normal roles. Record where they pause, who can resolve mistakes and what happens if kitchen communication fails. Ask the seller to address those gaps before installation.
Clover pricing varies by plan and by the processor or bank that sells it. Check software or service fees, device charges, authorization fees, processing markup, card network assessments, batch fees and app subscriptions. Look for subscriptions billed separately as well as charges on the processing statement.
We are not a Clover partner and do not sell hardware directly or set prices. We quote real numbers on a free statement review. Select Get a Free Statement Review on the contact page and upload a recent statement so we can explain the charges line by line.
Common questions
Still not sure? Ask us directly.
Should every server have a handheld?
Not necessarily. Observe where orders and payments slow down, then test a proposed arrangement with staff. Confirm device and software charges before expanding it.
Are kitchen screens always included?
Do not assume they are. Ask for an equipment list and a written explanation of any software or app needed for kitchen display functions.
Can managers control refunds?
Ask the seller to demonstrate role permissions on the proposed plan. Verify that staff can perform routine work while sensitive actions require the appropriate approval.
What should I ask about changing processors?
Ask whether the exact devices can move and what restrictions apply. Clover hardware is often tied to the processor or bank that sold it.
