Clover Fees: Know What You Can Question
Clover fees can come from the processing agreement, the software plan, equipment arrangements and optional apps. Understanding the fee types helps you ask better questions before signing or renewing. This guide focuses on who controls the charges and how to compare or challenge them, rather than identifying statement lines.
Short answer
What fees can a Clover merchant pay?
A Clover merchant may pay processing markup, transaction charges, monthly software and device fees, PCI fees, chargeback fees and equipment lease payments. Early termination charges may apply under the agreement. Separate seller controlled charges from card network costs, then ask which terms can change and request any negotiated changes in writing.
Separate seller charges from network costs
Interchange and card network assessments are generally passed through from the payment system. They are different from the markup your processor adds for its service. Ask the seller to explain which parts reflect network costs and which parts it controls under your proposed agreement.
A bundled processing charge may not show that distinction clearly. Request enough detail to understand the offer before comparing it with another seller. Do not assume that every charge described as a processing expense is a card network requirement.
Understand recurring and activity based fees
Monthly software charges depend on the plan and seller. Per device charges may add to the recurring total when you equip additional service points. Ask whether an inactive or replacement device continues to generate a fee, and how to remove equipment from billing.
Processing markup can apply alongside per transaction or authorization fees. Clarify which payment events trigger each fee, including declined attempts or refunds if applicable. The quoted processing rate alone may not describe the total cost of running cards through your setup.
- Confirm which software functions are included before accepting a plan upgrade.
- Ask whether app subscriptions are optional and how their cancellation works.
- Compare account charges alongside transaction charges using the same sales activity.
Question compliance and dispute charges
PCI compliance or non compliance fees may appear in the seller agreement. Ask what you must complete, how completion is recorded and whether a particular charge continues after you meet the requirements. Paying a fee does not by itself establish that your business has completed the required work.
Chargeback fees concern payment disputes. Request the fee schedule and ask how a dispute outcome affects the charge. Understand the process for submitting supporting records and who provides assistance. Do not assume that winning a dispute automatically reverses every related fee.
Read the cost of leaving
Early termination fees and equipment leases deserve separate attention. A processing cancellation may leave a lease obligation in place. Ask for the cancellation procedure, renewal language and any notice requirements before signing. Keep copies of every agreement associated with the offer.
If you already have an agreement, request a written explanation of the cost to exit rather than relying on a new seller to interpret it. Check hardware portability too, since a device tied to the existing processor may affect your replacement choices.
Negotiate with specific requests
Choose the charges you want explained, then ask whether each can be removed, reduced or replaced with a clearer arrangement. Seller controlled charges are the place to discuss concessions. For passed through network costs, ask for clarification rather than assuming the seller can waive the underlying expense.

Common questions
Still not sure? Ask us directly.
Are all Clover fees set by Clover?
No. Banks and processors set their own processing terms and often equipment and plan pricing. App providers and equipment agreements can introduce separate obligations.
Can I negotiate interchange?
Interchange is a passed through payment cost rather than the processor markup. Ask the seller to distinguish the categories so negotiation focuses on charges it controls.
What should a waived fee look like in writing?
The final agreement or amendment should identify the charge and explain the waiver conditions. Check whether the waiver expires or depends on keeping other services.
Is this the same as reading my statement?
No. This page explains fee categories and negotiation. The statement fees guide walks through identifying charges and reconciling bills for a particular month.
