Ledger Line POS / Credit repair

Short answerRead this first

How do I get a credit repair merchant account?

Bill only after each service is fully performed, use a written contract with the required federal disclosures and three business day cancellation notice, keep sales calls clear of telemarketing advance fee traps, and show a refund and dispute process. Underwriters check all of that before they approve credit repair payment processing.

The right setup for credit repair merchants

What fits

A billing platform that charges only after each round of work is documented and complete.

Why it matters here

Federal law bans charging before services are fully performed, so the billing calendar is the heart of the file.

Most common setup mistakes

  • Monthly fees charged on day one
  • Setup fees before any dispute letter goes out
  • Phone sales that take payment on the call

Send us one statement and Dewey will tell you if your setup fits your credit repair business.

  • Step 2

    Optimized POS and payment setup

We set up billing triggers tied to completed work, client portal records and a descriptor clients recognize. Your CRM stays; the payment setup is built around it.

  • Step 3

No long term contracts. No termination fees.

Credit repair firms grow fast and change offers, so flexibility matters. We work with no long term contracts and no early termination fees.

  • Step 4

    Keep more of every swipe

Credit repair statements often carry high risk pricing and recurring billing fees. We break them down so you can see your true cost per client.

The CROA advance fee ban drives every decision

The Credit Repair Organizations Act says a credit repair organization may not charge or receive any money for a service it has agreed to perform before that service is fully performed. That single sentence in 15 U.S.C. 1679b is why an underwriter wants to see your billing calendar, not just your website.

Monthly retainers collected on day one, setup fees taken before any dispute letter goes out, and prepaid packages are the patterns that get credit repair merchant services declined or shut down. Billing after documented work, such as the end of each monthly round of disputes, is the pattern underwriters expect.

Contracts, disclosures and the three day cancel right

CROA requires a written and dated contract signed by the consumer before any service begins, and it lets the consumer cancel without penalty before midnight of the third business day after signing. The statute even prescribes the wording of the cancellation notice your client must receive.

Underwriters ask for a copy of that contract and the disclosure statement. If the cancel window is missing or buried, expect a decline. If it is clear and your onboarding flow waits for the window to close before any work starts, the file reads as a business that knows the law.

Telemarketing rules add a second layer

If you sell by phone, the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule adds its own limit. It bars requesting or receiving payment for services represented to remove derogatory information or improve credit until the promised time frame has passed and the seller has provided a consumer report showing the promised results, issued more than six months after those results were achieved.

Because of that rule, many credit repair companies keep phone sales away from payment entirely and collect only through a signed online agreement after work is done. Tell the underwriter exactly how a sale happens, including any call center or affiliate, because outbound telemarketing is itself a category Visa watches.

Why credit repair payment processing gets declined

Clients who do not see a score change quickly often dispute the charge, even when the work was done. Chargebacks above the card network monitoring thresholds put the account, and the acquirer, in a monitoring program, so many generalist processors simply avoid the vertical.

Marketing is the other trigger. Promises to remove accurate negative items, guaranteed point increases or a new credit identity are red flags for reviewers and regulators alike. Keep claims factual and tied to the dispute process you actually run.

Credit repair companies that run lead affiliates should collect copies of those affiliates' ads, since the reviewer will treat a partner's guarantee as your own.

Documents that help a merchant account for credit repair companies

Bring your client contract, CROA disclosure, cancellation notice, billing schedule, three months of processing statements if you have them, your refund policy, a sample client portal screen showing completed work, and any state registration or bond your state requires for credit services organizations.

Add a short written description of your dispute workflow, how you document each round and how you notify clients before billing. That evidence also wins chargebacks, which keeps your credit repair merchant account healthy after approval.

How we set up credit repair merchant services

We review your contract and billing timing first, flag anything that conflicts with CROA or the Telemarketing Sales Rule, and then place the file with acquirers that already underwrite credit repair. Any reserve is set by the acquirer, and we show you every term before you sign. We also set a billing descriptor clients recognize.

Dewey Kopenga, in payment processing since 2018, reviews every file himself before it goes to underwriting. Send a recent statement and he will explain your current fees item by item.

What to check on your credit repair statement

  • High risk markup on every monthly charge

Common questions

Still not sure? Ask us directly.

Can a credit repair company charge an upfront fee?

Federal law bars charging for a service before it is fully performed, so upfront and setup fees are a common reason for declines.

What is the credit repair three day cancel rule?

CROA lets a consumer cancel without penalty before midnight of the third business day after signing the contract.

Does the Telemarketing Sales Rule apply to credit repair?

Yes, when you sell by phone. It limits payment until promised results are shown on a consumer report issued more than six months later.

Why do processors decline credit repair merchant accounts?

Advance fee billing, guaranteed result marketing and chargebacks from clients who expected faster score changes.

What should my credit repair contract include?

A written, dated agreement, the federal disclosure statement, the services and timing, total cost and the cancellation notice.
