Ledger Line POS / Online gaming and fantasy sports

Short answerRead this first

How do operators get an online gambling merchant account?

Hold the license for every state you accept players from, run geolocation and identity checks before funds move, code transactions correctly, and show responsible gaming tools. Fantasy sports and skill contests follow their own state registrations and a separate card network code.

The right setup for gaming merchants

What fits

A gateway with geolocation checks, age verification and deposit limits that match the states where you operate.

Why it matters here

Gaming and contest sites are judged on whether every deposit comes from an allowed location and an adult player.

Most common setup mistakes

  • Accepting deposits from states where your contests are not allowed
  • No age or identity check before the first deposit
  • Payout methods that do not match deposit methods

Send us one statement and Dewey will tell you if your setup fits your gaming business.

  • Step 2

    Optimized POS and payment setup

We set up deposits, payouts and geolocation rules so your money flow matches your licenses and contest rules. Each part of the setup is documented for the acquirer before launch.

  • Step 3

No long term contracts. No termination fees.

State gaming law keeps changing, and you should be free to change your setup when it does. We work with no long term contracts and no early termination fees.

  • Step 4

    Keep more of every swipe

Gaming statements often carry high risk pricing, cross border fees and per deposit costs. We show you what each deposit costs you and where fees are stacking up.

How the networks code gaming

Visa classifies card absent gambling under MCC 7995 as Tier 1 of its integrity risk program, covering wagers, lottery tickets, casino chips and other games of chance. Games of skill, such as daily fantasy sports where players pay to enter and skill decides the result, fall under MCC 5816 in Tier 2.

Mastercard's Specialty Merchant Registration Program covers non face to face gambling under MCC 7801, 7802 and 7995, and skill games under 7994. Every one of those merchants must be registered by the acquirer before processing.

UIGEA and Regulation GG

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act bars gambling businesses from accepting card payments and other funds in connection with unlawful internet gambling. Its definitions exclude fantasy contests that meet specific conditions, including prizes set in advance and outcomes reflecting participant skill.

Regulation GG, the rule that implements the law, requires payment systems to have policies to identify and block restricted transactions. That is why a gambling merchant account file must prove legality state by state.

Fantasy sports merchant account applicants should include their contest rules and prize tables, since those show the reviewer exactly how skill and chance factor into each entry.

State licensing for fantasy sports and betting

States regulate this market directly. New York, for example, requires interactive fantasy sports operators that host paid entry contests for New York players to register with the State Gaming Commission, with personal history disclosures and fingerprints for key owners and officers, and registrations that run three years.

A sports betting merchant account follows the sportsbook license in each state. Operators should map their licenses to the states their geolocation allows.

What underwriters expect to see

Bring licenses or registrations for every state, the geolocation and identity vendor you use, age checks matched to each state's minimum, deposit limits, self exclusion and other responsible gaming tools, and your terms. Show how you handle a player who tries to deposit from a blocked state.

Esports tournaments and skill game arcades should explain exactly how skill decides outcomes, because that determines whether they are coded as gambling or games of skill.

Responsible gaming as underwriting evidence

Deposit limits, cooling off periods, self exclusion and links to problem gambling help lines are usually required by state regulators. They also show an acquirer that disputes from players who regret losses are being prevented, not just fought.

Keep reports on how often each tool is used. Hard numbers are more convincing than a policy page.

Geolocation and identity checks

Most state licenses require knowing where the player is when the wager or entry is placed. Name your geolocation vendor, show how a blocked location is handled, and match identity checks to each state's minimum age. Bring sample reports so the underwriter can see the controls working.

Sweepstakes, social and esports models

Not every gaming business takes wagers. Social casino apps, esports tournaments and skill based contests each sit at a different point between games of chance and games of skill, and the coding follows the facts. Explain how players pay, what they can win and what determines the result.

Prizes set in advance and outcomes driven by participant skill are among the conditions UIGEA uses to exclude certain fantasy contests. Legal review of your model, shared with the acquirer, turns a vague application into a clear one for any merchant account for online gaming.

How we place gaming merchant account files

We organize your licensing, compliance stack and volume history and present it to acquirers that register gaming merchants. Reserve terms are set by the acquirer, in writing, before you sign.

Dewey Kopenga, in payment processing since 2018, reviews every file himself before it goes to underwriting. Send a statement for a free review.

What to check on your gaming statement

We check these and every other line during a merchant statement analysis. New to statements? Read how to read a merchant statement.

  • Cross border fees on domestic players
  • Per deposit gateway fees on top of the discount rate
  • Dispute fees from friendly fraud deposits
  • Reserve balances that are never reconciled
