Ledger Line POS / Nutraceuticals and supplements

Short answerRead this first

How do I qualify for a nutraceutical merchant account?

Show supplement facts labels, manufacturer quality records, claim support for what you advertise, and a checkout with clear subscription consent if you rebill. Brands that sell on straight sale or plainly disclosed subscriptions, with low dispute history, are the strongest high risk nutraceutical merchant account applicants.

The right setup for supplement merchants

What fits

A gateway that handles subscriptions with clear consent, renewal reminders and easy online cancellation.

Why it matters here

Supplement accounts close most often because of billing disputes, not products, so the checkout and renewal flow matters as much as the label.

Most common setup mistakes

  • A free trial that quietly converts into a monthly charge
  • Disease or weight loss claims on product pages
  • No order confirmation email showing the renewal terms

Send us one statement and Dewey will tell you if your setup fits your supplement business.

  • Step 2

    Optimized POS and payment setup

We set up your checkout, subscription plans and descriptor so customers recognize every charge, and connect chargeback alerts so disputes can be answered fast. Your POS or cart stays in place; the payment setup around it gets optimized.

  • Step 3

No long term contracts. No termination fees.

Supplement brands test new offers all the time, and a long contract makes that harder. We place accounts with no long term contracts and no early termination fees, so you are never locked in.

  • Step 4

    Keep more of every swipe

Nutraceutical statements often bury per transaction risk fees and alert fees under vague names. We break the statement down so you can see your true cost per order.

Where the risk in supplements really comes from

Visa's integrity risk program places subscription negative option merchants under MCC 5968 in Tier 3, and Mastercard requires registration for negative option billing of physical products. In practice that is where nutraceutical brands land when they use trial and rebill offers.

In April 2020 Visa added rules for free trials and introductory offers: express consent at enrollment, an emailed copy of the terms, a reminder at least seven days before billing when a trial ends, and an easy online cancellation path. Visa also expanded issuer dispute rights for misrepresentation. Funnels that skip those steps generate chargebacks fast.

Claims are an underwriting document

The FTC's Health Products Compliance Guidance says health claims must be backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence, and it notes the agency has brought more than 200 cases over supplement and health product advertising since 1998. Acquirers read your sales pages with that standard in mind.

Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act framework the FDA oversees, structure and function claims carry a required disclaimer and cannot promise to treat disease. Weight loss, immunity and performance products draw the closest reading.

Protein powders, greens blends, sleep aids and sports nutrition all fall under the same review, and each one is judged on how it is marketed and billed rather than on the category name alone.

Why nutraceutical merchant account solutions fail after approval

Accounts usually close when the live funnel stops matching the approved one: a new upsell, an affiliate who runs aggressive ads, or a refund policy that changed. Visa's acquirer monitoring program now flags a United States merchant at a 1.5 percent ratio of fraud and disputes with at least 1,500 events, and Mastercard's excessive chargeback threshold starts at 1.5 percent with 100 chargebacks.

Terminations for excessive disputes are listed in Visa's screening database under reason code 22. Keeping the funnel clean is far cheaper than finding a new nutraceutical merchant account payment processor.

What strengthens your application

Bring labels, a certificate of analysis or manufacturer specification sheets, your manufacturer's quality documentation, a refund policy, and the exact checkout flow with screenshots. LegitScript offers supplement certification for sites where at least half the products are dietary supplements marketed mainly in the United States.

If you run a subscription, show the consent checkbox, the confirmation email and the cancel page. Those three screens answer most underwriting questions before they are asked.

Straight sale or continuity: choosing your model

Straight sale means the customer pays once for what they see. Continuity means the order repeats until cancelled. Both can be approved, but they are reviewed as different businesses, and many merchant account for nutraceutical applications are strongest when the brand runs its core products as straight sale and offers subscribe and save as a clearly labeled option.

Amazon and marketplace sellers moving to their own store should bring marketplace sales reports and review history. A clean record elsewhere helps an underwriter trust a new direct channel.

Label review before you launch

Compare each label and sales page against the FDA's dietary supplement framework and the FTC's guidance before submitting. Remove words that imply treating a disease, make sure the supplement facts panel matches the formula, and keep the required disclaimer next to structure and function claims. That review takes an afternoon and saves months of trouble.

How we place nutraceutical files

We match brands with acquirers that underwrite supplements and set up a descriptor with your brand and support contact, plus dispute alerts. Reserve terms are set by the acquirer after review and we share them in writing before you sign.

Dewey Kopenga, in payment processing since 2018, reviews every file himself before it goes to underwriting. Upload a recent statement for a free review of what you pay today.

What to check on your supplement statement

We check these and every other line during a merchant statement analysis. New to statements? Read how to read a merchant statement.

  • Per order risk or fraud screening fees with no detail
  • Alert or dispute service fees billed separately
  • Rolling holds that were never released on schedule
  • Rates that rose after the first few months
