CBD and hemp processing
CBD Payment Processing Built for Hemp Brands
CBD payment processing is approved or declined on paperwork, and the paperwork changed when Congress rewrote the federal definition of hemp in November 2025. This page walks through what a CBD payment processor checks today, why so many hemp sellers lose accounts, and how we package your file so it reads clean to underwriting.
Short answerRead this first
What do I need for CBD payment processing?
You need hemp derived products at or under the federal THC limit, batch level certificates of analysis from an independent lab, labels and a website with no disease claims, a list of states you ship to, and a clean processing history. Underwriters compare every SKU against those documents before approving a CBD merchant account.
The right setup for CBD and hemp merchants
What fits
- A CBD ready gateway with batch level product records, plus a counter terminal if you also run a shop.
Why it matters here
- Underwriters match every SKU to a certificate of analysis, so your catalog, labels and checkout need to read the same story before the file is submitted.
Most common setup mistakes
- Applying as a general vitamin store instead of disclosing CBD
- Listing products with no current lab report attached
- Shipping to every state with no restriction list at checkout

Step 2
Optimized POS and payment setup
We set up your gateway, product catalog and shipping rules so the file you submit matches the store customers see. Online orders and counter sales get the right setup for each channel, so a tincture sold at the register is not processed like a web order.
Step 3
No long term contracts. No termination fees.
Hemp rules are moving toward the December 2026 deadline, and you should never be stuck in a long processing contract when your product line has to change. We work with no long term contracts and no early termination fees.
Step 4
Keep more of every swipe
CBD statements often carry high risk markups on top of interchange, plus monthly platform and compliance fees. We read each line and show you which charges are tied to the category and which are simply padding.
Why card networks treat CBD as high risk
There is no merchant category code that says CBD. A Mastercard director told an industry panel that the code follows the business type, so a gym selling CBD keeps the gym code. That leaves the acquirer responsible for knowing exactly what is inside every bottle, gummy and tincture it is funding.
Visa set out its conditions in a 2019 security summit deck. Acquirers must confirm the CBD is hemp derived, that it is legal where it is sold, that it is not marketed as a food or dietary supplement, and that the merchant makes no disease claims on labels, sites or social media. The FDA still says CBD cannot be sold as a dietary supplement or added to food under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
The 2025 hemp rewrite every CBD merchant account must plan for
The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3 percent delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. The November 2025 appropriations law changed the test to total THC, which counts THCA, and excluded finished hemp cannabinoid products holding more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container. The Congressional Research Service reports that a September 2026 continuing resolution pushed most of those provisions to December 11, 2026.
For a CBD credit card processing account, that date matters more than any rate. Products that pass today may fall outside federal hemp next quarter, and underwriters reviewing a catalog will ask which SKUs you plan to reformulate, relabel or retire. Bringing that plan to the table early is one of the strongest signals you can send.
Why hemp product payment processing gets shut off
Most closures trace back to a mismatch between the approved application and what is actually sold. A brand approved for topicals adds edibles, a wellness page quietly promises pain relief, or a new flavor ships with a lab report that is a year old. Card brand monitoring scans sites for exactly those changes.
When an acquirer terminates for prohibited transactions, Visa rules require it to list the merchant in the Visa Merchant Screening Service, where reason code 24 covers illegal transactions. Mastercard keeps a similar file called MATCH. A listing follows the owners to every future application, which is why we work to keep you off it in the first place.
What a CBD payment gateway application should include
Bring a current, batch specific certificate of analysis for every SKU showing total THC, cannabinoid profile and contaminant screens, along with the lab name. Add your product list with photos, your ingredient sourcing, your shipping matrix by state, and three to six months of statements if you have them.
LegitScript runs a CBD certification that many acquirers recognize, and its FAQ notes that edible CBD products are not eligible. If you sell both, we help you decide how to separate the lines. Finally, rewrite any copy that hints at treating a condition. Structure and comfort language reads very differently to an underwriter than cure language.
How we keep payment processing for CBD running
We match your file to acquirers that already underwrite hemp, set the account up with a descriptor customers recognize, and turn on dispute alerts so a confused buyer reaches you before the bank. Reserve terms are set by the acquirer after review, and we put every term in writing before you sign.
Dewey Kopenga, in payment processing since 2018, reviews every file himself before it goes to underwriting. Send us a recent statement and he will show you what you pay now and what a properly underwritten CBD merchant account should look like.
What to check on your CBD and hemp statement
We check these and every other line during a merchant statement analysis. New to statements? Read how to read a merchant statement.
- A high risk discount rate applied to every sale, including counter sales
- Monthly compliance or high risk program fees with no explanation
- Chargeback fees from customers who did not recognize the descriptor
- Funding delays longer than your agreement states
Common questions
Still not sure? Ask us directly.
Will the new hemp definition close my CBD merchant account?
It can if your catalog keeps products that fall outside federal hemp after the effective date. Review each SKU against the total THC and per container limits now and share the plan with your acquirer.
Can I sell CBD gummies on the same account as oils?
Ask first. Visa conditions bar marketing CBD as food, and LegitScript excludes edibles from its CBD certification, so many acquirers treat edibles separately.
Is there a special MCC for CBD payment processing?
No. Mastercard has said the merchant category code follows your business type, so underwriting relies on your product list and lab reports instead.
What lab documents does a CBD payment processor want?
Batch specific certificates of analysis from an independent lab showing total THC, the cannabinoid profile and contaminant testing, matched to the products on your site.
Does a CBD payment gateway care about my website copy?
Yes. Disease claims anywhere on labels, pages or social posts break Visa conditions and are a common reason for closures.
