Ledger Line POS / Adult

Short answerRead this first

What do I need for an adult merchant account?

Content businesses need written agreements with every content provider, verified age and identity for all performers, recorded consent, review before publication, a complaint and takedown process, and clear billing. Adult products retailers selling physical goods face lighter rules but still need clear descriptors and policies.

The right setup for adult merchants

What fits

A gateway with strong age and consent verification, recognizable descriptors and recurring billing built for memberships.

Why it matters here

Adult is in the strictest card network tier, so how you verify age, consent and billing is reviewed as closely as the content itself.

Most common setup mistakes

  • Using a descriptor customers do not recognize on their statement
  • Weak age checks at signup
  • Hiding the cancel option for memberships

Send us one statement and Dewey will tell you if your setup fits your adult business.

  • Step 2

    Optimized POS and payment setup

We set up membership billing, descriptors and verification records so your site reads clean to the acquirer's monitoring vendor. Retail stores selling adult products get counter processing set up separately.

  • Step 3

No long term contracts. No termination fees.

Adult merchants need room to move if terms stop fitting. We place accounts with no long term contracts and no early termination fees.

  • Step 4

    Keep more of every swipe

Adult statements commonly include registration pass through fees, high risk markups and per transaction gateway fees. We break down every line so you know which are required and which are negotiable.

Network rules that define adult processing

Visa classifies card absent adult content and services under MCC 5967 as Tier 1 in its integrity risk program, alongside dating and escort services, gambling and pharmacies. Visa describes Tier 1 as businesses where illegal activity without controls could cause significant harm to individuals.

Mastercard's Specialty Merchant Registration Program covers card absent adult sales under MCC 5967 and 7841. By registering a merchant, the acquirer certifies that the merchant's conduct is lawful.

Mastercard's 2021 content standards

Mastercard's AN 5196, effective October 15, 2021, requires adult content merchants that host third party uploads to sign written agreements with each content provider, require written consent from everyone depicted, verify the age and identity of performers, allow uploads only from verified providers, and review content before it is published, including controls for live streaming.

These rules are why adult live streaming merchant account applications are reviewed so closely. Platforms must show the tools and staff that make those promises real.

Membership sites that bill monthly should also show how they confirm adult status at signup in addition to the checks applied to performers.

State age verification laws

States have passed laws requiring age verification for adult websites. In 2025 the Supreme Court upheld the Texas law in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. Underwriters now ask which states your traffic comes from and how you verify age where it is required.

An age verification vendor, geolocation and documented policies make that question easy to answer.

Adult products versus adult services

Not every adult business is a content site. Retailers selling physical adult products are a different underwriting conversation from subscription content or live services, and an adult products merchant account often has lighter requirements. Describing your business precisely gets the right review.

Adult services merchant account files, by contrast, are judged on licensing and local law, so bring every permit.

Billing clarity reduces friendly fraud

Many adult disputes come from cardholders who do not recognize a charge or prefer not to explain it. A descriptor that is recognizable but discreet, an emailed receipt, a support link in every receipt and an easy cancel option for memberships reduce those disputes.

Recurring memberships also fall under Visa's 2020 rules for trials and introductory offers, including consent, reminders and online cancellation, so build those into the join page from the start.

Complaint and takedown process

Mastercard's standards expect a complaint process for content that may be illegal or posted without consent. Publish the process, staff it, keep records of each request and decision, and be ready to share them with your acquirer. Platforms that treat this as part of operations stay open.

Live streaming and creator platforms

Platforms that let independent creators stream or sell content carry the full weight of Mastercard's standards, because the merchant is responsible for every upload. That means verifying each creator with government identification, confirming the identification belongs to the person, monitoring live streams in real time and keeping the ability to stop a stream immediately.

Studios that produce their own content have a simpler file, since they control every performer agreement and record directly. Merchant account adult applications go smoother when the business model is described plainly from the first page.

Payout flows to creators should also be documented, since acquirers want to know who receives funds and how those recipients are verified.

How we approach adult business merchant account files

We assemble your content controls, verification vendor, policies and billing flow, then place the file with an adult merchant account provider that registers 5967 merchants. Clear descriptors and dispute alerts cut friendly fraud. Reserve terms come from the acquirer after review, in writing.

Dewey Kopenga, in payment processing since 2018, reviews every file himself before it goes to underwriting. Send a recent statement for a free review.

What to check on your adult statement

We check these and every other line during a merchant statement analysis. New to statements? Read how to read a merchant statement.

  • Registration fees billed more than once a year
  • High risk markup layered on gateway fees
  • Chargeback fees from unrecognized descriptors
  • Holds held past the agreed release date

Common questions

Still not sure? Ask us directly.

Why is an adult merchant account Tier 1 at Visa?

Visa places card absent adult content in Tier 1 because, without controls, illegal activity could cause serious harm to individuals.

What does Mastercard require from adult content sites?

Under AN 5196: provider agreements, written consent, verified age and identity, verified uploaders and review before publication.

Do adult product stores face the same rules?

Physical product retailers are usually reviewed differently from content platforms, though clear billing and policies still matter.

Yes. Underwriters ask how you verify age in states that require it, especially after the 2025 Supreme Court ruling on the Texas law.

Can creator platforms get an adult merchant account?

Yes, with Mastercard's controls in place: verified creators, recorded consent, review before publication and live stream monitoring.
